Tres Palmas was picking up the long period swell very well and offering several friendly giants to those who equipped to charge. Beautiful form and long lines made this swell event memorable. Props to all the dudes charging it out there.

2019 Lifeguard Training Complete! https://rinconsurfreport.com/rincon-surf-blog/rincon-surf-news/2019-lifeguard-training-complete/ Wed, 05 Jun 2019 00:18:07 +0000 https://rinconsurfreport.com/?p=17150 2019 Lifeguard Training Complete!

Rincon Paddle Boards Staff Completes Lifeguard Training.

Long before it was a legal requirement for paddleboard and surfing instructors, Rincon Paddle Boards (RPB) staff have been well trained in water safety, lifesaving techniques, CPR and have been certified lifeguards from multiple recognized agencies including the USLA and American Redcross. This past May of 2019, the RPB staff renewed certification as lifeguards, waterfront rescue, and the latest CPR and First Aid certifications. Maintaining those credentials is more than just having an updated piece of paper. Lifesaving is serious and everyone trained HARD to go above and beyond what was required. The course was very physically strenuous and as real to life as possible. Of course, the best accidents are the ones that never happen. Prevention is key, but accidents still happen. This is why in addition to the life-guarding techniques in themselves, contingency plans are always already planned out ahead of time by Rincon Paddle Board Staff before beginning any tours or surf lessons. Know that you are in well trained and capable hands when you choose Rincon Paddleboards to have fun out in the water here in beautiful Rincon, Puerto Rico. Additional info here…

A full spectrum curriculum for ocean safety!

Extended training at the UPR with Ocean Rescue Caribbean Academy and CARICOOS.
The training program was very extensive and included some special extended training. The Ocean Rescue Caribbean Academy (ORCA), with the collaboration of Sea Grant Puerto Rico and the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (UPRM), offered a training course to local lifeguards to prepare them to ensure the life of those that entertain themselves at the beaches in Puerto Rico, particularly during summer season (high season for locals). Sunset Paddle Tours and More! https://rinconsurfreport.com/rincon-surf-blog/sunset-paddle-tours-and-more/ Mon, 10 Dec 2018 01:59:25 +0000 https://rinconsurfreport.com/?p=16342
Rincon is well known for breathe taking sunsets. At the end of every day, the sky becomes a work of art with a variety of colors and glows across the clouds and resulting reflection across the ocean. You can now safely paddle out and experience these beautiful sunsets from an awesome perspective – out on the water on a Paddle Board. Rincon Paddleboards is now offering sunset tours with options to meet the needs of clients of all comfort levels.

Sunset Paddle Tour
Paddle out and tour the Tres Palmas marine reserve near sundown, watch the sun go down, and make it back just before it gets too dark to see.

Sunset Paddle with LED Night Tour
Paddle out into the sunset over the pristine marine reserve into nightfall and then paddle around with multi-colored LED lights on your return. The reef glows in multi-color beneath your board with an amazing clarity. The visibility is often excellent and makes for an unforgettable experience.

Full Night Tour
Sunset paddle across clear and calm waters of the Tres Palmas marine reserve. After the sun goes down, the reef is illuminated by the LED attached to each board. After a rest and some water preparations are made for the night dive. The boards provide abundant illumination and the snorkeling resembles somewhat of an underwater space exploration. It’s awesome! Next, when time and conditions permit, enjoy some star gazing out in the water on top of your board while you dry off and get ready to paddle back.

Swell of the Season Barrel Fest – Part 1 https://rinconsurfreport.com/rincon-surf-blog/puerto-rico-surf-galleries/swell-of-the-season-barrel-fest-part-1/ Mon, 16 Apr 2018 22:22:44 +0000 https://rinconsurfreport.com/?p=15516 The swell of the season got a very special spot working better than I’ve seen in the past 8 or 10 years. The lighting was perfect, the crowd actually wasn’t the bad, the barrels were wide open and it was basically an entire day of perfect barrels. This will be the first part of a few galleries that have been backlogged for a while. We shot so many photos during this swell event it has been hard to keep up with it. A very special thanks goes to one of Rincon Surf Report’s photographers, Jonathan Rodriguez. He shot the entire afternoon session at this spot and captured some incredible pics! Jonathan is a super cool dude with a heart of gold and a great family friend of ours. He needs your help:

Help Jonathan Beat Liver Cancer!

It broke my heart to hear that Jonathan was diagnosed with cancer again. He has always been an awesome friend. He and his wife are super positive, energetic, and donate a large part of their time in volunteer work. If you’ve met Jonathan at the beach while he’s shooting you probably understand that he’s a good dude. If you’ve never met him, take my word for it! Bonus Shots: Evening Tow-In Tres Palmas https://rinconsurfreport.com/rincon-surf-blog/puerto-rico-surf-galleries/bonus-shots-evening-tow-in-tres-palmas/ Tue, 06 Mar 2018 01:52:58 +0000 https://rinconsurfreport.com/?p=15215 Late afternoon and into the evening some very brave and skilled surfers got some really huge rides at Tres Palmas. The conditions were still not ideal with a lot of extra movement in the water and down the face. Nonetheless these chargers went for it – even going so extreme as to go for a left when the opportunity presented itself. The winds were finally starting to blow offshore and hopefully they will continue to groom the swell overnight. These were some of the biggest I’ve ever seen in my life in person.

The waves were just perfect. This will be the start of one of the best runs of swell we’ve had so far in 2018. February was terrible. Just terrible. The earth is making up for lost time by throwing a double down of long period swell at us over the next week. I’m really looking forward to surfing a lot and taking a lot of pictures. This is March 1st, 2018.

January 29, 2018 Post-Hurricane Update https://rinconsurfreport.com/rincon-surf-blog/january-29-2018-post-hurricane-update/ Mon, 29 Jan 2018 23:34:00 +0000 https://rinconsurfreport.com/?p=14883 Rincon continuing to rebuild.
I’m sorry for being so late on this post. I wanted to try and do a short version, but in many ways there isn’t a short version. I’m going to try and make this as brief and to the point as I can but unfortunately, I have a lot to say.

Is Puerto Rico back to “normal”?

Absolutely not! People around the island are strong and have adapted for what is now looking like a long-term situation, but it can still be taxing living without running water and yes there are still plenty of people around the island without running water or power. The island as a whole has seemed to accomplish “manageable” but it’s been really hard to push beyond that for a lot of municipalities. Compared to how things were immediately after the storm, “manageable” is a notable accomplishment! Several improvements have been achieved throughout the island, but the sad reality is that PR still has a lot of restoration work on its hands. Because Rincon bounced back so well, it’s easy to get caught in a bubble and forget that the rest of the island just isn’t as well off. Therefore, if you’re coming to visit PR, please be extra patient and kind – it will go a long way. For some areas, people’s entire way of living has had to change in an instant.

Rincon really is a special place.

If you’ve been here before you know this already and it’s probably why you’re reading about how things are going down here. Rincon has bounced back well. It is true, some people are still without power or water in certain parts of Rincon, but Rincon seems to still function very well. And yes, Rincon is doing better than several other parts of the island. Rincon still remains a work in progress and it will most likely stay that way for a while, but at least there is progress. The progress is as follows:

1. Communications and connectivity have improved drastically. Most carriers are working 80% of the time within the past month. Some towers will still go down when they run out of diesel, but it’s normally just for a day or so. Cable internet is now operational at most places near the 115 south of the plaza through to Calvache. In my opinion, this has become the most notable improvement since the last update. Internet over the Claro LTE network is possible in the majority of Rincon.
2. You can finally pay for things with credit cards here in Rincon.
3. Many restaurants and shops are operational.
4. Grocery stores are operating pretty much as they were before the hurricane.
5. Gas stations have gas and many take cards.
6. Drinking water can be purchased at the grocery store.
7. Aguadilla airport appears to be back to normal.
8. Rental cars are more available.
9. The weather is finally cooling down and it’s not 100+ degrees everyday.
10. The surf has been awesome!

The “Bad”

1. The roads are very roughed up from this whole ordeal and continue to get more roughed up. They were terrible to begin with and the storm itself with it’s flooding made matters worse. Then the heavy machinery took it’s toll on the roads and still continues to damage the streets. Also, in many areas including Rincon, you will still have random roadblocks and delays while workers clean-up debris and trees. I cannot stress enough the importance of PAYING ATTENTION while driving. The roads are bad and everyone drives crazy here.
2. Traffic can get way worse than it was before the hurricane in some areas. Some places where street lights were completely destroyed and removed have actually seen a major improvement in traffic flow. This is especially true for the north side of the island. However, some areas are severely congested where poorly timed traffic lights have become operational again (MAYAGUEZ).
3. Electricty and water will still experience outages in areas where they have already been restored. The duration of the outages will always be uncertain and there is always the possibility that the outages can become long-term again.
4. The crowds in the line-up just don’t seem to diminish. In fact, on some days they’re worse. Rincon isn’t just a destination enjoyed by the US and international travelers. Many people from different parts of the island are regularly visiting or staying in Rincon now. And why wouldn’t they? A steady flow of visitors is good for the economy of Rincon, but inevitably adds more surfers to the water at the same time. Let’s all play nice.

Post-Hurricane: Rincon Paddleboards Rebuilt and Ready for 2018! https://rinconsurfreport.com/rincon-surf-blog/rincon-surf-news/post-hurricane-rincon-paddleboards-rebuilt-and-ready-for-2018/ Tue, 09 Jan 2018 19:30:42 +0000 https://rinconsurfreport.com/?p=14661 Rincon Paddleboards Rebuilt and Ready for 2018!
The damage done to Rincon by Hurricane Maria was very severe. However, there is one simple truth: you can’t stop the awesome! After a lot of hard work to stabilize Rincon and get everything accessible again, everyone could focus getting Rincon ready for the coming season. Much of the economy in Rincon and Puerto Rico in general depends heavily on Tourism. People from all over the world love escaping to this beautiful island to enjoy a unique tranquility and peaceful ambiance, as well as take advantage of the natural thrills out in the ocean. Rincon really is an awesome place and no Hurricane can rob it of its beauty for long. After removal of fallen trees and debris, and then more trees and debris, and then a few more trees and debris several Rincon businesses could start rebuilding again. Rincon Paddleboards was left with a fairly daunting challenge – the beach was gone. For a business setup and run from the shoreline of the beach, you can see how this would be a large obstacle. However, if you know Damanio and Chikako (owners of Rincon Paddleboards) then you understand that this wasn’t going to stop them. With enough hard work and ingenuity just about anything is possible.

Rincon Paddleboards rebuilding after Hurricane Maria. They rebuilt the beach. Literally, they put the sand back up by the shoreline, the nearby coastal areas, replanted and replaced trees that had fallen, reinforced the barren rootballs of surviving trees that somehow still stood upright, and took advantage of the piles of dirt/mud left from nearby river flooding in the field of the premises and replaced what Maria washed away near the ocean. This was a lot of work and it all started with shovels and wheel barrows until heavy machinery became available again. After a lot of hard work, soon the island started to grow back stronger and continued to naturally add to the beach. New tides, currents, and swells would help add sand and leave it sticking to the new chunk of beach at Rincon Paddleboards. The reefs are still alive and the fish continue to thrive in the marine reserve of Tres Palmas. In many areas nature has sprouted back so heavily that it’s hard to tell anything ever happened! Basically, Rincon Paddleboards is back and ready for business! Come on down, give our economy a much needed boost, and have the time of your life enjoying their SUP Tours, Night tours, and Surf Lessons. Rincon Paddleboards is ready for you!
