Rincon, Puerto Rico about to see more fun surf!

All of the models are calling for small conditions, but with the weather in its current setup I don’t see how it’s possible for Rincon to stay flat. We should have fun surf for several days. This a beautiful setup. If that frontal boundary pushes out a little further tomorrow we could have a couple of days of south winds and NW swell. This will make several exposed spots glassy for the majority of the day with chest high surf and bigger sets. NOAA’s marine weather forecasts are calling for gale force winds on the backside of the front so the swell should linger on for 3-4 days once the fetch sets up (possibly more if the storm deepens and amplifies in the North Atlantic). The arrival of this next pulse should be Wednesday morning. Any swell showing up tomorrow on the Bahamas buoy will confirm this. Should we see a delay, I would still expect to see swell from Thursday through Sunday in the chest to head high range with light trade winds. We have all the ingredients for a fun batch of swell – let’s see if it materializes.

Big NW swell on the way for surfing Rincon, Puerto Rico.

Get ready folks, we have a massive cold-front setting up a solid NW swell with a possible N swell follow through. The Bahamas buoy has been pinging the first chunk of swell all day with swell around 8ft at 12 seconds from the NW. Normally this means that we should see the arrival within 24 to 36 hours from the first ping. We could see some background swell as early as 6am but nothing sizeable until 6pm on Tuesday. Wednesday is looking like it will max out as the day goes on with sets over double overhead. Remember swell height always makes a bigger face height when it breaks (especially in medium to long period swells). DO NOT OVERESTIMATE YOUR ABILITIES! Have respect for the ocean. Inspect your leash and leash plug on your board. Don’t paddle out if you wouldn’t be able to make it back to shore if your board and/or leash broke from a really bad wipe-out, or if you ate it over the falls really hard and had the wind knocked out of you. Thursday will also be large. Though the size will drop a little bit, be cautious of clean-up sets. This swell event will NOT be a good swell for paddling out on a giant inflatable hot-dog unless you’re Jamie O’Brian. Saturday will have smaller leftovers in the head high range, but another pulse may fill in over the weekend with continued swell into next week a couple of feet overhead. PLEASE BE SAFE!

Happy about more surf in Rincon, sad it won’t last long.

Thursday and Friday should be really fun with sets a couple feet overhead. By Saturday, the surf will start to fade out and stay small for a while. An easterly wind swell may persist leaving the north side of the island more surf-able than Rincon. Rincon will stay great for surf lessons. Long range is putting a decent sized swell here in Rincon on the 23rd. That’s the next swell event to look forward to.
