Plenty of weather to keep some small surf on tap.

I know everyone’s gotta be tired after the solid run of swell we’ve had. Let your arms grow back. We’ll take a little break for the next week as we stay small, but we shouldn’t be completely flat. The north side of the island should see some waist to chest high surf all of next week. Rincon will most likely stay in the knee to waist high range with some bigger sets on the right tide, at the right spot, on the right day. Catch up on work, chores, or other responsibilities, it shouldn’t be but another week before we start to see some coldfront action… I hope. In the meantime, it’s a great time to learn how to surf. The waves will be perfect beginner waves all of the coming week.

Possible Surf Taunts Puerto Rico

We have a lot going on in the Atlantic and it teeters on the fine line between surf makers and flatness. First off, forget Tropical Storm Ida. I told you that those two storms (TD Nine and TD Ten at the time) would amount to nothing and be meaningless – I’ve been right so far. Tropical swell needs a lot of factors working for it to make perfect waves. It does happen at times and makes for memorable swells, which is why everyone gets excited over a new storm forming. However, this is not the year for tropical swells. Now the two lows in the open Atlantic are what we’re looking at. If we can get some easterly movement from the one off the US coast or some downward movement from the one way north of PR we could see some fun waves in the chest to head high range. If they at least just build some northerly fetch on their west sides we should see some waist to chest high waves at many Rincon spots. The winds are forecast to be pretty much dead from here through to next week. Any swell that shows up should be glassy in the morning just about everywhere. So if we do get waves there should be plenty of spots to choose from. Don’t all just crowd one peak.

A couple days of surf and then back to summer.

I’m stoked to be able to get in the water for a couple of days this late in May. And honestly, I’m surprised we’re still seeing storm systems pull off the states this late in the season. After this pulse fades out tomorrow evening we might have some knee high leftovers for Wednesday. Tomorrow should still be waist to chest high though at the most exposed breaks. Everything long range just points at the usual wind chop on the North side of the island and small to flat conditions here in Rincon. Anything can happen though. We might have a good setup to get more long period NE swell on the north side of the island a week out or so.

I know I sound like a broken record, but go north if you want to surf.

Rincon is going to stay small to flat for the foreseeable future. Most pulses that show up on the beach will be perfect for surf lessons or longboard, but nothing extreme is on the radar. Meanwhile, every morning the north coast of the island has been super fun! I know it doesn’t work with everyone’s schedule to drive up there every day, but it’s good to have it as an option if your stoke is low and you really need to surf. In another month, there won’t be anything up there either so enjoy the setup while it lasts.

Tropics? Anything there?

The official forecasts from the big dogs are for a super quiet 2015 Hurricane Season. Personally, I think we’ll see a more active season than last year, but that’s not saying much. Our main swell window is already on lockdown, so tropical swell will be hard to make. The flows we’re seeing now and that may continue through the summer aren’t conducive to wave making storms for Puerto Rico. But once again, personally I have a hunch that we’ll do better than last year.

Rincon is about to get windy. Small surf opportunities mid-week.

Looks like we will have no shortage of wind as high pressure will dominate most of this coming week. Mid-week we could see some waist to chest high wrap-around swell mixed with some northerly background swell. I think the Isabela area will probably be fun in the mornings and have plenty of chest to head high days this week with a moderate chop in the late morning to afternoon. I doubt even the early morning session will have glassy conditions up there, but you should at least be able to grab some fun waves. Rincon looks like it will remain surf lesson sized surf with sideshore winds at the west side spots. Next weekend is currently showing some potential on the long-range models. All in all, I believe we’ll see at least one more decent swell in April, but for now what we will get this week is more of the seasonal norm for April. This coming week is looking like trademark April.

High pressure will dominate the weekend.

After today’s bump fades out tomorrow afternoon, we will remain small to flat over the weekend with some NE high pressure wind swell in the mix. Don’t expect much more than a knee high surf lesson wave for Rincon. The north side of the island should be considerably larger and see some head high sets over the weekend (in Isabela).

Possible swell for next week.

Next week however, could see some waist to chest high surf for the majority of the work week. Right now the biggest days are looking like Tuesday and Wednesday with some possible chest to head high surf with glassy conditions in the morning.

A phantom background swell might show up for a few hours tomorrow (Friday) at some point and maybe again on Saturday. Besides that, Rincon is looking to stay flat until the end of the month. December is set to rage! The models are throwing non-stop storm action and some of them are bound to be swell makers. Granted, the majority will push up and away from our island and throw swell at Europe, but not all of them. Have fun, don’t lose your mind. I hope we get the phantom pulses. I need to surf! If all else fails, the North side of the island should continue to have some bumpy chest to head high waves for the next week or so. The mornings could clean up a bit, just don’t expect oil-slick glass.
